Futher weekend details

So managed to find Powell's and Everyday Music. They're within a half-block of each other, and right in this semi-trendy part of Downtown Portland (there's like a Diesel, Sur La Table, Adidas, P.F. Changs, Whole Foods Market, etc) and lots of pubs/breweries cum restaraunts. Powell's was impressive, with it spanning such a large area I was at a loss of what to go looking for. Instead I just spent a lot of time wandering the stacks looking at all the books. Heck, they even have a section dedicated to manga (not as extensive as Books Off!, Kinokuniya, or Asahiya but a section none-the-less).

Everyday Music was a bit of a let-down, but I think that may have been from my preconceived notion of what the store was like. They actually do have a very extensive collection but it tends to lean more towards jazz/classical/folk (that section is about twice the size of the rest of the store). However it is still larger than most record stores put together so I had good luck in finding some CDs I wished to sample:

Leftfield "Leftism"
Portishead "Dummy"
Portishead "Roseland NYC Live" (promo cd, not for sale but it was!)
DJ Shadow "Endtroducing.."
Madvillan "Madvillany"
Verve "Remixed^3"
Massive Attack "Mezzanine"

A mixture of some new stuff and some old stuff crossing quite a few genres. Trying to open myself up to new styles and I think this is a good cross-section to sample acid jazz, trip-hop, and hip-hop.

Sunday also brings about another local county event, the Banks tractor pull! In addition, they will be having a demolition derby... with.. COMBINES! Imagine the carnage! The destruction! 30 tons of metal running into each other! Shoot me if I start wearing cowboy boots and a stetson... :)
